The dining room: figure of the mother

The dining room: Fear of mother, 1994, Lichtinstallation

A translucent curtain closes of a space, becoming a screen trough which we can observe a matronly female figure and a dining room table and chairs. When the spectator finally goes inside he will find nothing but an armchair, a gas heater, and various packages of food and medicines scattered on the floor in an orderly fashion. It seems as if a child has been playing with them. In between them, spotlights project their shadows. lengthening or doubling them, in the direction of the perimeter of the curtain, creating from them already described figurative picture, which represents the psychic childrens’ shadows of their parents.
"The dining room" is an introduction to the underlying affirmation of Appearances: the spectator's spatial location vis-à-vis the different visual fields (always relative and partial) towards which he is drawn, belongs to a temporary situation, which has been expressly designed to confuse his expectations. After having contemplated the world of effects -the shadows and reflections onto the context of life circumstances- he finds himself face to face with the world of inner facts. And he is able to accept the arbitrariness –a causality of the psychological shadows- from the point of view of childhood memories.
